SHIRLEY — Food and more … all ready for you to stop by and enjoy.

Let’s start with the our August monthly Senior BBQ on Wednesday the 21st. This BBQ is sponsored by state Sen. Jamie Eldridge and state Rep. Jen Benson. We will be serving chicken, hot dogs or hamburgers along with a drink and dessert. All for just $3. Unless the State House is in session, they will be there to meet with you. Come by, talk with them and enjoy the last senior BBQ of the summer.

Also, remember the “Choice Café” is now open and serving at noon on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. It’s a lighter, healthier meal prepared by the Montachusett Opportunity Council’s kitchen and served congregate-style here at the center. The suggested donation is $2.25 and YOU MUST CALL AHEAD. We need you to make your reservations by NOON on the Monday before the lunch. Call and make your reservation if you want to enjoy the meal. The menu for August includes soup, seafood salad, tuna salad and pasta salad as well as a drink and dessert.

On Weds., Aug. 7, we will have Pizza and a Movie. The movie is “Guilt Trip” starring Barbara Streisand.

As you can see, Wednesday is Nutrition day at the Shirley Senior Center.

Getting in shape

How about getting in shape for the summer? We have senior fitness classes that include weight training and Pilates and are geared towards each individual’s needs. The classes are held on Tuesday nights at 5:30 p.m. or Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. If you are a “working senior,” think about the Tuesday evening class. Get rid of stress and get in shape, all at the same time?

We also have Qigong on Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It helps your mind, body and spirit to relax and feel free. It’s also good for balance so you can minimize the likelihood of falling when you are walking on the beach.

On Thursday mornings from 9-10 a.m., we have Chair Yoga. Have trouble getting up off the mat, no problem. We use chairs not mats. It’s relaxing and helps with your flexibility.

Also in August we have the Senior Breakfast is on the fourth Monday at 8:30 a.m.

As always, we have Wii bowling on Mondays from 1-4 p.m. and Thursday’s from 10 a.m. to noon.

Card time is hot. Every Monday from 1-4 p.m., we are now doing Cribbage as well. Are you a cribbage player? Stop by and help build the base of players. We have Bridge every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and you can play Mexican Train Dominos starting at 10 a.m. Bingo is at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays and right after the BBQ.

And don’t forget Drop-in Café Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. A comfortable and relaxing place to have coffee, meet friends and enjoy some time away from home.

Remember, we have Nails by Kendra on the second and fourth Tuesdays.

Lots to do in August.
