GROTON — The Friends of Groton Elders, Inc. are planning a day trip to The Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton on Tuesday, July 9. Cost: $40, including bus transportation, admission, lunch and driver’s gratuity.)

The Museum of Russian Icons is an old mill building in Clinton, which has been masterfully recreated by Gordon Lankton into a display of Russian Icons. It is described as the largest and best display of Russian Icons outside of Russia.

The new Russian Nesting Doll exhibit features 83 Matryoshka sets of lavishly painted wooden nesting dolls of decreasing size, placed one inside the other. The dolls were produced over several decades and include pre-WWII dolls as well as dolls from various regional centers of Matryoshka production during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.

The Museum of Russian Icons collection of more than 500 Russian icons and artifacts is the largest of its kind in North America, and one of the largest private collections outside of Russia. It spans six centuries of iconography.

Following our tour of the museum and special exhibit, we will have some free time to explore the Russian Tea Room and Gift Shop.

We will then go to The Old Timer, a well known Clinton restaurant for our included lunch. Menu choices are as follows: 1. Baked stuffed boneless breast of chicken; 2. Pot roast of beef; 3. Baked haddock with crumb topping.

The bus will leave from Buckingham bus station on Station Avenue at 10:15 a.m. The museum visit is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by lunch and return to Groton by 3:30 p.m.

Please reserve your place by signing the sheet at the Groton Senior Center and indicate your choice of meal. You may call the Senior Center (978-448-1170) to sign up.
