TOWNSEND — The Fire Department is trying to find out what caused an early-morning fire that caused heavy damage to Champion Cleaners at 222 Main St. Tuesday.

Firefighters rushed to the Central Mall Plaza near the town center at about 4:30 a.m. in response to fire alarm signals coming in from the business.

Sprinklers inside the store kept the fire in check until the crew arrived there, according to Fire Chief Donald Klein. The fire was contained within a half hour but caused an estimated $5,000 to $10,000 damage to the establishment, he said.

Other businesses at the strip mall escaped damage from the fire. The Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

No one was injured.
