Since September, Shirley Brownie Troop 65233 has been working towards earning Brownie Quest Journey patches. This journey challenged the girls to discover their own traits and those of their family members and examine how they fit into their surrounding Girl Scout community, school community and the greater surrounding community. The journey culminates with a Take Action project to help the community.

When the girls participated in the food drive in the fall, they learned that the people of Shirley were very generous with donations. However, they learned that the food donations were only part of what Loaves & Fishes needs to help our neighbors, and that dental supplies were always needed. As a result, they decided to sponsor a toothbrush drive for Loaves & Fishes.

Between December and February, the girls collected dental supplies from family and friends. Drop boxes were placed at Lambert Hardware, Hazen Memorial Library, North Middlesex Savings Bank and Dr. Eddy’s office. The troop also toured Eddy’s office in February to learn about the importance of dental hygiene.

As a result of their efforts, on March 16, the troop presented Loaves & Fishes with a truckload of dental supplies that included more than 500 toothbrushes, more than 80 full-size and more than 250 trial-size toothpaste tubes, 83 floss packs, and more than 100 small bottles of mouthwash in addition to other items.

The troop would like to thank Eddy for providing a guided tour of his office, Dr. Decoteau, computer IT, and several other dental offices for their generous contributions, and Lambert Hardware, North Middlesex Savings Bank and Hazen Memorial Library for keeping donation boxes on display. Thanks also go to library volunteer Maia Cody for collecting dental supplies at St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School, in addition to all those that contributed to the drive. We could not have accomplished this without the generosity of our families, friends and neighbors.
