DEVENS — Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving brother targeted in the Boston Marathon bombing attacks of April 15, was transferred overnight between Thursday and Friday, April 25-26, to the Federal Medical Center on Devens.
The facility is located within the Devens Regional Enterprise Zone, which was formed following the 1996 decommissioning of the Fort Devens Army base.
The facility is specially equipped to handle prisoners with long-term mental and medical issues. Tsarnaev, 19, was released from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and transported directly to the facility. His older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed during a shootout with police in Watertown. Dzhokhar was taken into custody in Watertown on April 19.
Atop state charges, the younger Tsarnaev faces federal charges, including the use of a weapon of mass destruction. Two shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs exploded within seconds of one another near the Boston Marathon finish line on April 15, killing three and wounding and maiming more than 260 others.
