GROTON — On Saturday, April 20, from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a grand celebration of 10 years of enjoyment of our fabulous Nashua River Rail Trail and the dedication of the latest piece of public art — the historical railroad mural at the Pleasant Street underpass.
Saturday is the annual statewide “Park Serve” day, so there will be many volunteers cleaning and sprucing up our beloved rail trail. At 1 p.m. we will break to celebrate the 10 years of enjoyment that the trail has provided to us all. We will also be dedicating the latest piece of public art from collaboration with the art students at NOA Gallery of Groton. The Design Team (made up of five of NOA’s art students ranging in ages from 11-14 and their instructor) spent two years researching, designing, drawing and painting the 12-by-70- foot mural depicting a timeline of the history of the railroad that ran on this rail trail from 1848-1981.
Help us to celebrate the community service of these talented young artists, the support of their parents and many of the other NOA students who contributed the creation of this mural. And also to all the organizations who helped support them in these public art projects: the Friends of the Nashua River Rail Trail, the Groton Cultural Council and Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Groton Historical Society, the Groton Library, Lawrence Academy and many passing by who stopped to admire and help us paint a little of the mural. This is truly a community creative collaboration.
