Groton-Dunstable’s(16-2-4) boys’ soccer team will make the trek out to Western Mass. To face a familiar foe in the State Semifinals match at Westfield State University. The undefeated Belchertown(21-0-0) Orioles are the same team Groton-Dunstable defeated last year en route to the Division 2 State Championship. The Orioles defeated Monument Mountain 1-nil to advance to today’s game. Belchertown has punished the back of the net, and opposing defenses scoring 112 times this year in 21 matches.
The Crusaders defeated Belchertown last year by a score of 1-0. Don’t expect tonight’s game to be anything like Groton-Dunstable’s 6-1 District Finals blowout win over Tyngsboro.
Groton-Dunstable is led by senior scorer Nate Pomeroy who has 23 goals and 22 assists on the season. Sophomore Matt Tornaritis is the team’s second highest goal points getter with 23. Tornaritis recorded a hat trick in the Crusaders CMass. Finals win over Tyngsboro Sunday.
For the Orioles, Alex DeSantis paces Belchertown with 20 goals and 15 assists this season. In addition to DeSantis, the Orioles have three scorers with double digit totals. Nathaniel Fournier- 16 goals, Christopher Riel -15-goals, and Wesley Martin with 10.
Goalkeeper Zachary Parsons had a clean sheet in the Western Mass. D-2 District Finals against Monument Mountain. Parsons has corralled 75 saves in 21 matches this season. Parsons averages just under four saves per game.
For the Crusaders, it has been a goalkeeper committee type of season. Connor McGuire, John Nyilis and Jamie Bailey. Do not be surprised if this game goes to overtime.
