Baseball was in full force on Sunday, July 1, under the lights at Leominster’s newly remodeled Doyle Field.

A beautiful evening. Calm and warm.

North Middlesex and Leominster fans rooted their teams on. North Middlesex’s Andrew Jena took the mound for the local boys. Leominster’s Jakala threw the pill for the opposition. In the end, Leominster won the game 1-0.

Both pitchers were masterful.

“Andrew Jena pitched one whale of a ball game for us,” said NM manager Jim Canning. “His fastball had pop and he had ultimate control of a perfectly timed curveball, snapping low over the plate. It was a thing of beauty. The Leominster boys have been carrying big sticks all season, but Andrew had them off stride tonight.”

A nice opposite field gap shot triple by the Leominster’s speedy Stephen Ippollito proved to be the difference in the game.

Leominster’s Jakala was great too. He only allowed two hits: a a single by Nick Barry and a single by Chris Canning.

North Middlesex is still on top of the Montachusett Senior Babe Ruth League with a record of 7-2. Leominster is in second place at 6-3.

North Middlesex plays Narragansett next.

We hope that all Little Leaguers stay with baseball as they get older. It is a difficult game to play well, but you do not need to be a great athlete to be a good baseball player.

We encourage all youngsters to not let the game beat them back. With proper instruction and some practice, you can be a contributing slugger for your team. You can do it.
