With paint brushes and a rainbow of colorful paints, members of the Groton-Dunstable Regional High School Art Club designed and painted whimsical jungle animals and activities at Florence Roche School playground on Friday afternoon.

Shannon Qeeoan, president of the club, said the new painted giraffe, Florence Roche’s mascot, is designed with areas for children to color in with chalk during recess. Walter Campbell, a sophmore, was carefully painting in the yellow giraffe’s hooves with black paint while Qeeoan, a junior, painted in the giraffe’s spots with letters of the alphabet.

The club’s members collaborated on ideas, including the hopscotch court and the jungle theme.

According to Liz Medley, Florence Roche Elementary assistant principal, parents and community members helped paint a new “walking trail” of tiny footsteps for the children to follow around the playground. She felt the playground needed more activities to fill its large black-topped space and has several ideas, including a bucket basketball structure and wall ball court. Medley is asking for local landscapers’ involvement to add plants and greenery or contribute in other ways to fill the space so it is kid-friendly and fun.

The club applied for Lowe’s Tool Box for Education grant, which is nationwide, and is waiting to hear back. It has received a $500 grant from the Groton-Dunstable Education Foundation to purchase new playground equipment. The “extreme makeover” started in April during vacation week and the school’s goal is to have it completed in August, before the new school year begins. “The kids are excited,” Medley said.
