HARVARD — The Littleton softball team built a 12-0 lead with six run first and second innings, en route to a 16-5 win over Bromfield.
Kirby Garvey earned the victory on the mound, allowing three earned runs and nine hits while striking out 12 and walking six.
Janet Sorrells took the loss for the Lady Trojans, surrendering 11 hits while notching one strikeout.
“We didn’t play well in the first two innings,” said Bromfield coach Sue SIlver. “After that we did a good job. Haley Newsham played a strong all-around game for us, and Brittany Lee swung the ball really well.”
After the first batter of the game was retired, the Tigers exploded for six runs with the help of three costly errors by Bromfield. Brittany Macri walked and scored on Sarah Stone’s triple. After Jess Peterson and Kristen Smith reached on errors and Hannah Mon temagno drew a walk, Emily Derrig ripped a two-run single, and Brittany White added an RBI single.
Littleton put together another six-spot in the second, the key hit another two-run single by Derrig.
Bromfield got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Rachel Strathdee and Nicole Messcher walked, Karen Shaw reached on an error, and Newsham delivered an RBI single. Garvey escaped further damage, striking out the next two hitters to leave the bases loaded.
The Lady Trojans picked up another run in the third when Brittany Lee doubled and scored on Jackie Lee’s long double to right. The Littleton defense came up big, erasing Jackie Lee trying to stretch the hit with a perfectly relay throw.
The Tigers picked up a run in the top of the fourth when Macri tripled and scored, and the game moved into the top of the sixth with Littleton on top 13-2.
The Tigers, who had scored just one run in the previous three innings, scored three runs on run-producing hits by Garvey, Stone, and Peterson.
The Lady Trojans bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, all the damage coming after the first two hitters were retired. Newsham singled and Sorrels walked to set the table, and Nicole West drove in a run with a single, before Brittany Lee ripped a two-run single.
In the top of the seventh, centerfielder Jackie Lee made the defensive play of the game, racing in and making a shoestring catch of Garvey’s sinking line drive.
Bromfield didn’t go quietly in the bottom of the seventh as Robin Verheyen reached on an error, and Strathdee singled, but Garvey bore down and set down the next three hitters..
Stone led Littleton with two singles, a triple, three runs scored and two RBI. Macri added a single, triple and three runs scored.
Brittany Lee enjoyed a perfect day at the plate for the Lady Trojans with a walk, two singles and a double, scoring a run and driving in two. Newsham was solid out of the lead-off slot in the order with three singles, a run scored and an RBI.
