“How do you measure its worth? Just by the pleasure it gives here on earth.” Those are song lyrics from a holiday song about silver and gold, but I think they are appropriate for the welcoming Give & Take Shoppe at 38 Court Street in Groton.

The people who own this building and donate its use prefer to remain anonymous but the shop’s tireless head gal Rachael Budau, shall not. Staffed by volunteers, Rachael managers the shop and can be found here on most days. “This is a happy place,” Rachael says, as she unpacks boxes of donated clothes. “I really like meeting all the people who come in. This shop moved to this location about 4 years ago and it used to be in the Groton Town Hall but came to this location after the Hall was renovated.”

Karen Tuomi is the Executive Director of the Groton Trust Fund which are funds earmarked for projects like this shop as well as a source of funding for families in need. The Groton Trust Fund helps with college and camp scholarships, gifts or food during holiday time and almost anything for families in need.

From Karen, “This shop has been the result of the hard work and concern shown by Rachael and other volunteers who fill in from time to time. We do not accept money donations and you don’t need to bring something in to take something out. Whatever remains here at the end of seasons gets passed on to other donation centers. Nothing is thrown away. We accept everything and give everything away! Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of free and so for those who insist on giving something back perhaps they would consider donating to the Community Children’s Fund. They can send their donations to The Community Children’s Fund, Groton Town Hall, 143 Main Street, Groton, MA 01450.

From a visitor to the shop who also prefers to remain anonymous, “I think you can tell a lot about a community or town by what it does for others. Groton is a wonderful community not only because of its beauty but also because of its continuing concern and giving to those in need.”

“What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
