Last Sunday night, Shirley families gathered for the annual tree lighting at Whitely Park in Shirley. Once again, Gerry Wheeler provided the background music as folks gathered to enjoy hot chocolate provided by the Venture Scout Troop and cookies provided by local Girl Scouts and Brownies. Several families brought bird-friendly decorations for the tree and others are welcome to add more. The ShirleyArts! Children’s Touring Christmas Choir led the sing-along with old favorites about Santa and “Rudolph” and “Jingle Bells.” This year they also sang the gospel song, “Children Go Where I Send Thee,” and “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.”

The Shirley Fire Department provided transportation for Santa and his elf as they arrived to light the tree, pass out candy canes, and pose for pictures. Thanks go to all those mentioned above, as well as Jim, Christine, Shawn, and Jennifer McGrath, Nate Leonard, and Matt Sheils who helped with the evening’s festivities. It was a great kick-off to a month of holiday enjoyment.
