FITCHBURG — Arc Community Services is awarded $82,885.60 from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for transportation vehicles through the Mobility Assistance Program. Requirements for the grants included that the vehicles are used to transport the elderly and individuals with disabilities (regardless of age) when other forms of mass transportation are unavailable, insufficient, or inappropriate.

Arc Community Services transportation services include providing transportation for individuals with disabilities, many of whom are also elder and/or low income, to work, medical, volunteer and community activities at times when mass transit is unavailable or unable to meet the needs of this special needs population.

The Arc provides day supports to approximately 210 clients with disabilities Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 pm. On any given day, they provide some type of transportation to an event, worksite, and/or appointments for more than half of the individuals on site at no charge to the clients.
