Frederickson, strong defense carry Lady Patriots past Devils

LEOMINSTER — The North Middlesex softball team put it all together and pulled off a MidWach A stunner, knocking off Leominster 4-0.

The Lady Pats received a strong effort on the mound from Katie Frederickson, who silenced the Blue Devils’ bats, backed by strong defense. Frederickson allowed five hits while striking out one and walking four.

The North Middlesex defense prevented a run in the bottom of the first when Danielle Goudreau caught Kelsey Orareo’s fly ball and fired to the plate to nab a sliding Kaitlyn Storro, who had two hits for Leominster.

North Middlesex broke the ice in the top of the second when Hayley Lynch reached on an error, stole third and scored when Sarah Neuhaus grounded out for the only run the Lady Patriots would need.

Frederickson preserved the slim lead until the Lady Patriots added some late insurance runs.

In the top of the fifth, Julia Murray drew a two-out walk and scored when Emma Delaney ripped a line drive down the right field line to make it 2-0.

North Middlesex second baseman Jackie Cobleigh came up with a big defensive play in the bottom of the inning to keep the Blue Devils off the board. With runners on second and third with no outs, Cobleigh grabbed a hard line drive and tagged second base to complete a double play. Frederickson then retired the next hitter to escape unscathed.

North Middlesex tacked on another run in the top of the sixth. Lynch led off by lacing a double and later scored when she worked her way out of a rundown between third base and home plate.

The Patriots took advantage of a Leominster miscue to plate its final run of the game in the seventh as Lynch delivered a sacrifice fly.

North Middlesex improved to 1-5 overall, including 1-2 in MidWach A while Leominster dropped to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Murray turned in a strong defensive effort in left field for the Lady Patriots.
