Catherine E. Querze, 95, formerly of East Billerica and most recently a resident of Nashua, N.H., died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nashua. She was the beloved wife of the late Fernando L. Querze, to whom she was married for 47 years.

Born in Springfield in 1916 to Mario and Elina (Barafaldi) Balboni, Catherine moved with her family to Somerville, where she spent most of her early years as a waitress and worker for Lever Brothers. During World War II she was a nurse’s aid for the Army helping to treat soldiers returning from the war. Catherine and her husband moved to Billerica, where she was a homemaker, cashier supervisor at Mal’s Department Store, and eventually worked in food services for the Billerica School System, where she retired as a cafeteria manager.

Catherine had a love for cooking and baking, a passion she shared with her husband. She loved to travel, go ballroom dancing and returned to serving the veterans after her retirement by volunteering at the VA Hospital in Bedford. She was a loving grandmother of two, and a close friend to many in her community.

Catherine is survived by her daughter, Deborah, and husband, John Alciere, of Pepperell; son David Querze and wife, Diane, of Pepperell; and two grandsons, Justin and Ian Querze. She was the last surviving member of six siblings, the late Joseph Balboni and his wife, Phyllis; David Balboni and his wife, Mary; Henry Balboni and his wife, Helen; Peter Balboni and his wife, Anne; Mary (Duda) and her husband, William; and Youlanda Balboni. She also had a number of nieces and nephews.

A visitatation took place May 5 at the Hamilton-McGaffigan Funeral Home 37 Main St, Pepperell. Committal services followed at the Chapel of St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 96 Riverneck Road, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
