“Daylilies for Three-Season Bloom”

The Gardeners Exchange kickoff meeting for 2011 will take place at the Hazen Memorial Library in Shirley. The Gardeners Exchange is a small garden club serving Shirley and the surrounding communities. Following a short business meeting, there will be a slide presentation by Denise Pavlovich, owner of Covered Bridge Perennials in Pepperell and Treasurer of the New England Daylily Society. Denise will cover the various types of daylilies, the basics of daylily “care & feeding.” She will also introduce the American Hemerocallis Society website, including their "daylily database" and how to use it, and leave lots of time for questions. Cider & light snacks will be provided. Prospective Gardeners Exchange members are welcome to attend.

Skating and Sledding Party at Benjamin Hill Park: 2 to 8 p.m. Benjamin Hill Park will be having a skating and sledding party. The pool house will be open with hot beverages available. The Shirley Fire Department will be serving hot dogs and Hamburgers from 4 to 6 p.m. at a family friendly price. At dusk there will be a bonfire and lighted skating. All proceeds will benefit the Shirley Fire Department training facility. Everyone is welcome, dress warmly. For further information call 978-425-2600 ,ext. . 260.

Annual meeting: The annual meeting of the members of ShirleyArts! will be held at 2 p.m. at the Ayer-Shirley Middle School. The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers for the coming year. The meeting should be finished before auditions for “The Butler Did It Again,” which will start at 2:30 p.m. in the same building. The current officers and board members include John Rounds, Kathy Ellis, Laurie Marcinkewicz, Kathryn lyon, Barbara Nole. Vicki Landry, and Artistic Director Meredith Marcinkewicz. Mardi Gras at St. Anthony’s

Mardi Gras this year will be held on Saturday, March 5 at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall. It begins with a Happy Hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner and a show at 6 p.m. This year everyone’s favorite entertainer, Father Derosier, will return with a fabulous rendition of a song from Oliver. There will be lively music, great comedy and a really fun time. Tickets can be purchased by stopping by St. Anthony’s Rectory during the day or calling 978-425-4588.

Mail your request

for a 2011 dog license

Town and state laws require that all dogs be licensed each year, and dog licenses are sold through the Town Clerk’s office. 2011 licenses cost $15 per dog. 2010 licenses are valid through Dec. 31, 2010, and there is a one-month grace period for purchases through Jan 31. On Feb.. 1 or after, a $5 late fee applies, in accordance with town bylaw. The late fee does not apply if the dog is new to town less than 1 month or is less than 6 months of age. For 2011 Kennel License rates, please contact me at 978-425-2600, ,ext. . 205. A valid rabies certificate needs to be included with your request or be on file with the Town Clerk’s office.

Dog Licenses may be purchased by mailing your request to the Town Clerk’s Office at 7 Keady Way, Shirley, MA 01464. Please mail the following:

* a check made out to the Town of Shirley ($15 until Jan 31, $20 afterward) for each 2011 dog license.

* a self-addressed stamped envelope (include postage of $0.44 for 1-2 licenses and $0.61 for 3-4 licenses)

* a valid rabies certificate (unless we already have one on file for your pet). The certificate will be mailed back to you.

* a completed 2011 Dog License Application or a note with the following information: Owner’s Name, Street Address, Mailing Address, Telephone Number (please indicate if it is unlisted), Name of Dog, Breed, Color, Approx. Date of Birth, and Gender of Dog (Male, Male Neutered, Female or Female Spayed).

Blank Dog License Applications are also available at the Town Clerk’s office and at the Hazen Memorial Library.

Dog Licenses may also be purchased in person at the Town Clerk’s office.

Low-cost rabies clinics are held in the spring of each year by the Nashoba Associated Boards of Health in conjunction with local veterinarians.

Teen hangout kickoff: The Gate Youth Group will meet the first and third Saturday of each month from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the United Church of Shirley, 4 Lancaster Road, Shirley (parking lot located on Harvard Road). This is a free all-teen hangout for teenagers 13 to 18. This Black Light event will have free food, music, games, air hockey, pool, challenges, great speakers and more!
