GROTON — The first meeting of the year for the Groton Woman’s Club will be on Friday, Sept. 17, at the home of Audrey Bryce, 564 Longley Road, Groton. A garden party will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon. The hostess chairmen are Audrey Bryce, Lori McElroy, Nancy Olson, and the GWC Board members.
The Woman’s Club was founded in Groton in 1913 by Georgiana Boutwell, daughter of Gov. George Boutwell, and the purpose was to serve the community in an atmosphere of friendly fellowship. Some of the current service projects include: scholarships for high school seniors, Adopt-a-Road, monthly senior meals, Soldiers’ Angels Quilts, Lights on Two Commons, UNICEF, and Williams Barn Educational Projects.
Any woman living or working in the town of Groton is welcome to attend a meeting and consider joining the organization. Quoting honorary member, Helen McCarthy Sawyer: “Life has changed in many ways for women since 1913, but the Groton Woman’s Club continues to provide women of all ages an opportunity to strengthen their community and each other.” Meetings are held on the third Friday of each month at 11:30 a.m., normally in the Union Congregational Church Vestry.
