SHIRLEY — A correctional officer at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center faces charges that he was driving drunk last Sunday when his girlfriend jumped out of his moving pickup truck in North Andover.

According to police reports, Robert Paige, 45, a prison guard at the facility for 12 years, got into an argument with his live-in girlfriend, 27-year-old Jessalyn Vieweg, after the couple had been drinking heavily most of the day.

Vieweg was critically injured after jumping from Paige’s black 2002 Dodge Ram truck and flown by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston from Lawrence General Hospital.

The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. Sunday on Route 114 in North Andover, a short distance away from the couple’s home at 28 Royal Crest Drive, Apt. 2.

Police say Paige failed several field-sobriety tests at the scene and was placed under arrest. He was released on $1,500 cash bail after his arraignment Tuesday in Lawrence General Court and was ordered not to drive without a valid license, to remain alcohol-free and undergo random alcohol screenings with the court’s probation department.

Paige is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing on Aug. 11.

Nobody at the Souza-Baronowski Correctional Center or at the state’s Dept. of Corrections office returned calls for comment.
