AYER — A manhunt was launched in Ayer Sunday afternoon for the suspect in a bold daytime armed robbery of Archer’s Mobil at 70 Main St.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. a masked man, brandishing a knife, ordered the male clerk to hand over the register’s cash. The clerk ran out of the store, the suspect jumped the counter and emptied the register of its contents — approximately $200.

The clerk’s initial description was that the perpetrator was a clean-shaven white male with black hair, 25-30 years of age, wearing a red and darkly colored baseball cap and a black T-shirt.

He allegedly ran eastbound from the store cutting through Depot Square. Ayer, Shirley, Littleton and Massachusetts State Police responded, sparking a manhunt on foot.

A State Police K-9 unit simultaneously tracked the suspect in the general direction believed to be the man’s path of flight from clothing found behind a neighboring business.

The clothing located on the ground was a white T-shirt that the man allegedly used as a mask and a red and darkly colored hat.

Lt. Brian Gill of the Ayer Police Department says Officer Brian Cunningham and Detective Andrew Kularski are leading the information.
