After a full month and 10 separate competitions held by the Music Showcase Festival in Hershey Park, Penn., The Groton-Dunstable High School Chamber Chorus under the direction of Music Department Chair Tim Savoy, took top honors by winning the 2010 Grand Sweepstakes Award.

This award is presented to the highest scoring ensemble of nearly 200 that competed during this year’s competition where they scored a phenomenal average of 98.25 points out of a possible 100.

The panel of judges composed of distinguished musicians and college music professors made comments like:

“Gorgeous tone and control of sound! … Every second of the sound has direction and intensity. … Balance was great!”

“Such an ambitious repertoire and what a fantastic job they did with these pieces. Absolutely stunning!”

During the competition students were judged on technical criteria including intonation, rhythmic accuracy, technical accuracy, diction, interpretation of music, balance of vocal parts and overall performance.

Ron Simmons, executive director of the Music Showcase Festivals, stated “The hard work and dedication that you, the director, and every member of the ensemble displayed was exemplary. Your community, parents and administration should all be proud of your accomplishment.”

Music Showcase Festivals will be presenting a special custom-made Grand Sweepstakes Trophy to Groton-Dunstable to signify this prestigious award.
