Thirty-five Cub Scouts representing seven dens from Pack 11 Groton and Pack 12 West Groton recently came together to participate in the annual Cub Mobile Derby, held under beautiful, sunny skies at the Middle School Track and Field. The Cub Mobile event is Scouting’s spin on an old-time soapbox derby. Cub Scouts spent a month designing, assembling and decorating unique cars with their leaders during their regular den meetings. On race day scouts participated in four events — Slalom Course, Fire Drill Relay, Shortest Braking Distance and an all-out Sprint. The cars, drivers and runners all survived the rigorous competition with their friends and families cheering them on. Everyone had an excellent afternoon of fun.

Groton and West Groton have a very active Scouting community. Throughout the past year, Cub Scouts from our two packs have camped overnight on the Battleship Massachusetts, at Plymouth Plantation and at Pearl Hill State Park. We have marched in town parades, joined in the annual town cleanup, sold Christmas trees and popcorn, built and raced Pinewood Derby cars and launched real rockets. In den meetings, Scouts learn about the importance of being a responsible citizen, complete craft projects, earn badges, and enjoy fun team games as they grow through the ranks of Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos.

We welcome new scouts and volunteer leaders to explore the scouting program. Cub Scouting is for boys in grades one to five. If you are interested in learning more about joining either of our local packs, send an e-mail to pack12westgroton@yahoo.com.
