GROTON — The Groton Farmers Market at Williams Barn will open for its seventh season with two preliminary markets, June 25 and July 2 before the full market opens July 9. The market will be open every Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and will continue through Oct. 8. The market will be held in the field behind the barn at 160 Chicopee Row in Groton, 1.5 miles north of Main Street.

Twenty vendors are signed up for the 2010 market, including farmers with vegetables, herbs, flowers, plants, fruit, and frozen meat. Other foods for sale will include products made or processed in the Groton area with local ingredients such as breads, baked goods, honey, eggs, maple syrup, jams and jellies. New this year are a berry farmer and a vendor for spinach pie and other ready-to-eat specialties, as well as a baker of gluten-free goods. The market has been certified by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and its vendors are eligible to accept WIC coupons and Elder Coupons.

This year, the market will also offer live music supported by the Town of Groton Lecture Funds on most afternoons. Among the musicians will be Kenny Selcer, Nancy Beaudette, John Niemoller, Dick Baummer, Katrin Roush and Bob Wright.

The market has grown steadily as more customers appreciate the benefits of locally grown food and want to meet the people who produce the foods they eat. Groton has a long and rich history of agriculture, which the Williams Barn Committee has worked to preserve through the restoration of the barn, silo, and engine shed. The committee has also used the restored barn for the benefit of the community. Tours of the barn and walks on the surrounding conservation trails are encouraged during the market.
