Martha B. Gilson of Groton, formerly of Arlington, passed away April 22 at the age of 81. She is the daughter of the late Howard & Bertha (Swallow)_Gilson, beloved sister of Howard who died in 2009, and fond companion of the late Tony Cedrone.

Miss Gilson was born in Groton on Nov. 13, 1928. She was a graduate of Groton High School, Class of 1946. Martha graduated from Westbrook Junior College in 1948.

Immediately following her graduation, Martha attended the School of Nursing at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, where she completed her Principles and Practice of Nursing in 1951. While at Children’s Medical Center, Martha served in the capacity of head nurse in the Neurological Division. In addition, Martha had nursing assignments in Newfoundland and Hawaii. In her later years, she worked in a supervisory capacity at the Harvard University Law School Medical Clinic, where she retired in 2003.

Martha loved to share the oral history of her family through pictures, trinkets, and family heirlooms; she loved to read (always marking a specific item for others to see), and she particularly loved to spend time with her family and many friends.

Martha always spread warmth, wisdom, and great kindness to all.

Miss Gilson is survived by her two nephews, Luke and his wife Bernadette, David and his wife Cathy, and her niece Faith and her husband George Blanchard. She is also survived by her great-nephews and nieces, William, Howie, Alexandra, Catherine, Joshua, and the late Sarah.

Funeral services were held at First Parish Unitarian Church in Groton, on Tuesday April 27, 11 a.m. followed by a Committal at the Groton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to Boston Children’s Hospital.
