HARVARD — Both the Bromfield and Leominster girls lacrosse teams had two opponents to contend with on Tuesday afternoon, each other and Mother Nature. The game was played on a raw day with a persistent rain. In the end, Bromfield shook off Leominster with the final three goals of the contest, which cemented a satisfying 11-8 victory. The Lady Trojans played well in all areas, complementing strong offense with hustling defense.
Lauren Tower paced the Bromfield offense with five goals. Kiley Nygren turned in a strong all-around effort, playing with aggressiveness and scoring three goals. Lindsey Hazel finished with two goals and an assist while Kristen Tomasello added a single goal. Goaltender Maggie Rooney backboned the victory, making nine saves, supported by strong defense from Tory Sowizral.
Adrienne Randall led Leominster with three goals. Isabella Gitto added two goals while Maesa Phongsamouth, Michela Cupo and Kelley Ray added one each. Goaltender Sadie Landon stopped eight shots.
The first half featured strong goaltending and solid faceoff work from Hazel.
Bromfield broke on top quickly when Nygren made a strong run up the middle of the field and fired a shot inside the left post to make it 1-0.
The Lady Trojans narrowly missed doubling the lead less than a minute later when Tower fired a hard shot that was turned away by Landon.
Leominster evened things up when Randall stole a pass at midfield, broke in alone and sent a shot under the cross bar to make it 1-1.
Bromfield regained the lead when Tower netted a bouncer from 10 yards out, and extended the lead to 3-1 when another bouncing shot by Tower found the back of the net.
Rooney came up big just past the midway point of the half, stopping a hard, low shot by Stacie Charpentier, but Leominster drew to within 3-2 when Phongsamouth broke in from left wing and fired a shot high into the net.
The Lady Trojans rebuilt their two goal lead twice over the remainder of the first half as Tower sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by Randall, and Bromfield took a 5-3 advantage to intermission, owning a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.
Leominster received solid defense from Guiliana Zarella, who diffused Bromfield offensive chances in front of the Leominster goal.
The offensive tempo picked up in the second half as both teams started to execute.
The Lady Trojans drew first blood, extending the lead to 6-3 when Tomasello scooped up a loose ball and fired a low shot into the net.
Bromfield nearly extended the lead to four, but Landon came up big when she denied a Tower shot from close range, and the Blue Devils bounced back and scored three consecutive goals to tie things up. Two came from Gitto with the same move as she circled the net before scoring from outside the left post. During their three-goal spurt, Ray did a nice job of winning faceoffs, allowing Leominster to regain possession.
With the game tied, Bromfield called a timeout with 13:57 remaining in the game, and they answered immediately to regain the lead as Hazel won the face-off, made a long run and fired a perfectly placed shot under the cross bar.
Leominster bounced back to tie the game again as Cupo weaved through a number of Bromfield defenders and sent a shot high into the net to make it 7-7.
The rest of the game belonged to the Lady Trojans as they scored four of the final five goals. They did an outstanding job of controlling the ball and using the clock to their advantage, and also finished well around the net.
Hazel put them on top for good when when she broke in from right wing and netted a low shot. Tower added a 10-yard bouncing shot, and Nygren took a pass from Hazel in the middle of the field, cut to the right and netted a low shot to create breathing room at 10-7, forcing a Leominster timeout with 8:24 remaining.
The Blue Devils sliced a goal off the lead when Ray finished off a strong rush, but Bromfield became very patient offensively and controlled the remainder of the contest. They did a nice job of passing the ball around the perimeter and keeping it out of Leominster’s hands. They passed the ball well and made solid choices as the clock continued to wind down.
Bromfield finished things off with a timely insurance tally as Nygren made it 11-8 with a hard shot under the crossbar.
