I would like to voice my support for David Swain for Shirley selectman, and ask that others join me in this critical decision.

Dave Swain has served this town on many occasions; the selectboard, Finance Committee, and volunteer positions within baseball and Scouts to name a few. I have gotten to know him personally through these activities since we moved to town eight years ago, and I have found him to be collaborative, knowledgeable, generous, approachable, truthful, intelligent, aboveboard, and respectful.

He is a practical businessman, understands teamwork, and has specific goals (short and long-term) to improve Shirley, which will not rely on blame, unposted meetings, anger, inducement of fear, public scoldings, single-mindedness, or avoidance of questions to accomplish these goals.

As he stated at the debate, he will, if elected, take the seat with no hidden agenda and will demand full transparency of BOS activities. This is what the people of Shirley need and deserve.

To be fair, Mr. Capucci presented well at the debate also. He was on his best behavior. Although I believe Mr. Capucci is a hard worker and has good intentions, for some important aspects of Shirley including public safety, some of his actions I’ve observed have caused me to question his intentions and/or his capability to fully understand other needs within Shirley. Shirley is in a critical transition period, which will require some difficult and complex decisions and collaborations.

About a month ago I asked Dave Swain to tell me some things he would do if elected. He first expressed his concern and intent to work to heal Shirley, to become whole again. He then went on to his short- and long-term planning goals.

I am voting for Dave not because he is someone different than Mr. Capucci, I am voting for Dave Swain because I believe he is capable of achieving his goals and job responsibilities with respect, dignity and fiscal responsibility.
