The Democratic Town Committee here in Shirley elected officers at their Feb. 20 meeting at the Hazen Memorial Library. For the next two years, the following local Democrats will serve: Chip (Lee) Guercio, Chair, and incumbents Elizabeth Keddy, Treasurer, and Bonnie Jo Collins, Secretary.
Thanking the committee for his unanimous election, Guercio said, “I view it as our job as Democratic town committee members to do two things. First, keep the public engaged and informed on all issues, and, second, keep a fire under our Democratic candidates to be visible, be transparent, promote their record with pride, and be prepared and willing for open debate with any challengers, on any issue, at any time. Those of us at the most local of levels are the core of this grass-roots effort.”
“Unfortunately,” Guercio continued, “these extraordinarily negative economic times have clouded just how hard elected Democrats are working to mitigate issues with citizens, businesses, cities and towns. Democratic office holders need to fight back and fight harder to dispel the opposition’s catch phrases that blame incumbents. Staying focused on civil liberties, healthcare reform, education, senior citizens’ needs, mortgage reform, local aid and the environment are signs of strength in a candidate, not signs of weakness.”
The Shirley Democratic Town Committee is the local arm of the Democratic Party. Shirley Democratic Town Committee members share a common vision aligned with the principles of the Democratic Party and work locally in a variety of ways to support these principles.
