PEPPERELL — Robert A. Stockwell, 78, of Mason Street, a former longtime resident of Lunenburg, died Sunday, March 21 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, after a brief illness.

Mr. Stockwell was born in Fitchburg, Feb. 18, 1932, a son of Philip G. and Esther (Earls) Stockwell and resided much of his life in Lunenburg before moving to Pepperell 24 years ago.

He was a 1950 graduate of Leominster High School and attended the University of Massachusetts School of Agriculture.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, D. Jean (Lamy) Stockwell; two sons, Edward A. Stockwell of Gardner, Larry A. Stockwell of Lantana, Fla.; a brother, James E. Stockwell of Lunenburg; three sisters, Phyllis J. Hautanen of Bedford, Texas, Patricia L. Strickland of Harvard, Cynthia J. Wilson of Greenville, S.C.

He was the father of the late Dennis R. Stockwell of Lunenburg who died in 1972.

Prior to his retirement in 2001, Mr. Stockwell worked ten years in the maintenance department at Groton Dunstable High School, Groton. Prior to that he owned and operated Bob’s Greenhouses in Lunenburg and many years ago had worked at the former Hawbuck Orchards in Harvard.

He had served as an auxiliary officer in the Lunenburg Police Department. He enjoyed raising strawberries and tomatoes and took out mule-drawn hayrides. He was fond of the many horses and dogs he had through the years, especially his boxer, Sam.

A private graveside service will be held at South Cemetery, Lunenburg. There are no calling hours.
