Harvard School Supt. Jefferson awaits his fate

HARVARD — On Monday, Feb. 1, Lexington School Supt. Paul Ashe confirmed that Harvard Elementary School (HES) Principal Mary Beth Banios was not selected as the next principal of Lexington’s Fiske Elementary School.

Banios was one of three finalists for the lead administrator job at Fiske, one of Lexington’s 6 elementary schools.

Present Fiske Elementary principal Nancy Peterson is retiring at the end of this school year. No comment was immediately available Monday by Banios.

Instead, the Lexington School District has selected Dr. Thomas Martellone to lead the school. Martellone is the principal of the Greene Central school in Maine Administrative School District #52, regionally serving the needs of children in the towns of Greene, Leeds and Turner, located south of Augusta in central Maine.

Meanwhile, this Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Masconomet Regional School District School Committee makes its choice known for its next superintendent. Harvard School Superintendent. Thomas Jefferson is one of three finalists in that search. Masconomet serves the three communities of Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton on the North Shore of Massachusetts.

The degree of flux in this two-school town proved to be unsettling to the Harvard School Committee, which is now initiating a big-picture overview of how to handle such succession issues.
