For the past several years we have heard rumors a MART parking garage will be built on the rail trail site at Park and Main Streets.
The selectmen have told us many times the structure will not be multifloored or hold more than 200 to 250 cars and a second facility of approximately the same size will be built on Central Avenue.
For the record, MART has never agreed to this so-called ‘hybrid’ solution, allegedly endorsed by a charette held in May 2007.
A long-anticipated report from MART has been received by the Selectmen. Requests for copies of this report, albeit a draft and not a final document, by private citizens and the Public Spirit, have been denied by the Town Administrator.
In a Dec. 2, 2009 e-mail to MART and MRPC the Town Administrator indicated he would send his comments to them both by the end of last week.
This garage is to be funded entirely by public money — millions of dollars of public money. Why then are taxpayers and the press being denied access to the findings and recommendations, whether in draft or not?
More disturbing is the fact that there has been no public review or discussion of this report by the Selectmen, to whom it was sent for comment.
Rather, all comment seems to be emanating from behind the closed door to the office of the town administrator, out of the public eye and without any apparent authority or approval of the board for whom he works.
