AYER — William L. Adamson Sr., 80, of Douglas Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley, Littleton after a lengthy illness.

He was the husband of the late Lois H. (Harrigan) Adamson who died in 1994 and the brother of the late Walter Adamson of Indiana.

He leaves his son, William L. Adamson Jr. of Ayer, two grandchildren, Nicole Adamson of Ayer, William L. Adamson III and his fiancé, Kimberly J. Sabatino also of Ayer.

For five years Mr. Adamson served as the Ayer Police Chief, retiring in 1981. Prior to that he served as a police officer in the towns of Ayer, Shirley and Pepperell. Following his retirement from the town of Ayer he worked for 12 years for the Middlesex County Sheriff’s office.

Mr. Adamson was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 13, 1929, a son of William L. and Dorothy (Salm) Adamson and has resided in Ayer for over 33 years.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Ayer. He was also a member of the Ayer-Shirley Lions Club, the Caleb Butler Lodge of Masons, the Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association and the Massachusetts Police Association.

During the Korean Conflict Mr. Adamson served his country as a corporal in the United States Army.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at St. Mary’s Church, 31 Shirley Street, Ayer.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
