Fall Townwide Yard Sale: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second 2009 Shirley Townwide Yard Sale (rain date, Sunday, Sept. 20). This event is a fundraiser for the Shirley Volunteer, a nonprofit subscription newspaper.

New exhibit: Souvenirs of Summer Vacations is the theme for the current display at the Shirley Historical Society Museum. Stop by the museum, at 182 Center Road, any Monday or Saturday from10 a.m. to 1 p.m. if you have any questions, e-mail the museum at mail@shirleyhistory.org.

New England Barn Dance: 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. We invite everyone to join us for a Traditional New England Barn Dance at Historic Center Hall on the Common in Shirley Center. Enjoy an evening of music and dancing and help raise funds for the Center Town Hall. Music by the Two Fiddles! Caller Dudley Laufman will teach square, circle and contra dances to the beat of Celtic and Old Time Fiddle Tunes. A live band will play New England, Celtic and American Old Timey traditional tunes comprised of reels, jigs, and polkas. The dances are open to everyone young and old. Beginners are always welcome and it is not necessary to bring a partner. Donation at door: Adults $10 children 10-18, $5, children under 10 are free. Refreshments provided. Raffle prizes! Senior pizza and movie for lunch: The move, “Singing in the rain,” is open to all Shirley seniors and will be held at the Senior Drop-in Center beginning at 11 a.m. At 11:45 a.m., we will have an intermission with free pizza, popcorn and drinks. Once everyone has been served, the movie will resume. It is expected to b e over at about 1 p.m. Those who have seen this 1952 comedy musical starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds.

Sunday, Sept. 27

Shaker Village tours: The Shirley Historical Society has set the dates for the Fall tours of the Shirley Shaker Village site. The tours will begin at 1 p.m. on Sundays Sept. 27, Oct. 4 and Oct. 11. They last about 90 minutes and cost $12 for nonmembers.

The tours begin with an introductory talk in a restored Shaker room in one of the prison buildings at MCI Shirley. Visitors will learn about the life of the Shakers and the transition of the property. Then they will walk up the road and go inside two other Shaker buildings.

Reservations must be made in advance by mailing payment to Shirley Historical Society, PO Box 217, Shirley, MA 01464. Then confirmation and directions will be sent.

Christmas Extravaganza

St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Shirley will be holding its annual Christmas Extravaganza Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parish hall.

The craft fair has become a popular venue for Christmas shopping in the area, with talented crafters from all over Massachusetts. The selection of handmade crafts is extensive, and includes woodcrafts, quilted items, scrapbooks, country crafts, many Christmas items, rag bags, glassware, and much more. In addition to the crafts a small portion of the hall is dedicated to new children’s toys, books, games, puzzles, and gently used Christmas decorations and gifts. If you would like to participate as a crafter please call the church office at 978-425-4588 days and 978-425-4604 evenings for an application.
