Friends of the Hazen Library Annual Election: 6:30 p.m. Due to the lack of a quorum, the annual election of officers for the Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library has been rescheduled at the library, 3 Keady Way, Shirley. All Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library members are encouraged to run for an office. Requirements to run for an office include having a genuine interest in promoting the library, having time to attend monthly meetings from September through May, and being a paid Friends member. An officer may live in a town other than Shirley as long as the individual is a paid Friends member. For this year’s election, nominations are open for president, vice president and treasurer. The service commitment for all three positions is one year.

The Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1996 with the purpose of promoting the use of the library’s facilities and resources and raising money to supplement library programs.

If you are a Friends member, we urge you consider running for an office. The Friends are in need of leaders willing to plan and run library events, and serve on various committees. If you are not a Friends member, consider joining the organization. There is a need for volunteers who are able to help run events, help promote library programs and services, develop a fundraising idea and chair a committee to support it, serve on a fundraising or membership committee, or volunteer to help out at the library in other ways.

The Friends meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month from September through May at 6:30 p.m. at the library. For more information, contact Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library’s Vice-President, Leslie Cady, at 978-425-2315.

104 years of tradition!

St. Anthony’s Annual Bazaar in Shirley will kick off its festive weekend with its delicious and famous Lobster and Clam Supper. This year the bazaar will be held on Friday, Aug. 7 and Saturday, Aug. 8. The lobster dinner will be served, rain or shine, beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, and has long been considered the traditional beginning of a weekend of food, fun and games. The lobsters always sell out no matter how many we order, so be sure to get there early.

This year the Saturday dinner will feature grilled chicken, coleslaw, baked beans and rolls. There will also be assorted baked goods and delicious homemade pies available on both days for anyone who loves dessert.

Highlights of the bazaar this year include Kiddie Land for ages 2-8, the Fire Department’s dunking booth (can we get Father D on the hot seat?), Chug-A-Lug for the over 18 crowd, and a large assortment of games for all ages. There is truly something for everyone with lots of prizes to win and lots of chances to take, either on the giant raffle, Chinese auction or pot luck.

Saturday afternoon is set aside for the annual auction. This is a super opportunity for those who may be looking for bargains that promise to be too good to pass up. It often includes large furniture pieces in good condition and many things for children. The auction will be held at noon, so plan to eat lunch with us while you bid. The snack bar will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs and other fast foods. In addition to the auction, the white elephant sale will be ongoing for two days. Items include household goods, linens, craft items, glassware, tools, Christmas and other holiday decorations, and lots and lots of toys! Many beautiful items have been donated; you’ll be surprised at the bargains you will find.

Make sure to save the date — Friday, Aug. 7. from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 8, at noon and again from 5 to 10 p.m. Come join the fun at St. Anthony’s Parish, 14 Phoenix St., Shirley (978-425-4588).
