Hazardous-Waste Collection Day a success, but may be the last

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

PEPPERELL — The Hazardous Waste Collection Day run by the Board of Health at the Jersey Street fire station June 20 saw 224 residents take advantage of the chance to offload household wastes, health board members reported.

There were 77 full carloads (25 pound maximum) brought in, and 147 vehicles contained 10 pounds or less of a variety of products otherwise not allowed in trash or at the transfer station, all collected by contractor Clean Harbors.

Cost to the BOH budget was $7,812 plus postage for informational fliers sent to residents, board secretary Sandra Grogan said. The contract maximum was $10,000.

There will, however, be no hazardous-waste day in fiscal 2010, which began July 1. The money to fund it was stripped from the health board’s budget by Town Meeting on recommendation of the Finance Committee.
