Mr. John Richmond Sheedy, 91, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at his home in Greer, S.C.

He was born Aug. 1, 1917, on Gibbet Hill in Groton, Mass., to Louis H. Sheedy and Gertrude Grady Sheedy.

He went to Lawrence Academy, the University of Maine, where he received his undergraduate degree and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and lettered in varsity football and hockey, Boston College School of Law and Boston University School of Management. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. For almost 40 years he worked in construction management, retiring at age 70 from Fluor Daniel Corp.

He wedded on June 29, 1946, to his wife Dorothy Katherine (Longley) Sheedy, to whom he was married for almost 63 years.

He is predeceased by his mother and father, and both sisters, Jane Sheedy Palmer and Barbara Sheedy Barry. He is survived by his wife; his three children, John Richmond (Angela) Sheedy Jr. of Minneapolis, James Wade (Elizabeth) Sheedy of Rock Hill, S.C., and Sarah Louise Sheedy; his four grandchildren, Todd Michael (Pamela) Sheedy, Michael Patrick Sheedy, Parker Dickenson Sheedy and Richmond English Sheedy; and his two great grandchildren, Heather Verone Sheedy and McKenna Kathryn Sheedy.

The family would like to express their thanks to Gentiva Hospice for the care and support given to Mr. Sheedy.

A graveside service will be held at the family’s plot at Groton Cemetery, Chicopee Row, Groton, at 10 a.m. on June 5. After the graveside service the family will receive guests at The Gibbet Hill Grill where Mr. Sheedy was born. Flowers may be sent to Badger Funeral Home, 45 School St., Groton, MA 01450.

Contributions in honor of Mr. Sheedy may be made to Sacred Heart/St. James Church, 271 Main St., Groton, MA 01450.
