School enrollment numbers still show kids in Shirley

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

HARVARD — The public schools in Harvard currently have 1,283 students enrolled but that number could increase because of the contract the School Department has with MassDevelopment regarding Devens students.

“Right now some of the students in Devens are still enrolled in the Shirley school system,” School Superintendent Thomas Jefferson said. “I’m going to be writing letters to the families that have children still attending school in Shirley.”

Harvard Elementary School currently has 530 enrolled students, consisting of residents and “choice” students, but there are 17 Devens kids currently enrolled in Shirley this school year.

Bromfield has 753 currently enrolled and only seven students are still currently enrolled in Shirley.

Currently the eighth-grade class has the most students, 121, but it’s the third grade that the School Department is watching closely.

With 96 students currently enrolled and five still attending school out of district, Jefferson said the department is looking at whether or not the fourth grade will need to add another unit for the next school year.
