AUBURN — The North Middlesex Jr. Midget Mustangs won the Central Massachusetts championship with a convincing 32-13 win over the hosting Auburn Blue Devils.
The Mustangs took control of the game by scoring three touchdowns in the first half.
Joe Dolciotto was the first Mustang to get into the endzone with a 32-yard burst up the middle to set the tone of the game. Great blocks by Trey Callahan, Matt Augusta, Chad Osbourne, Bryan Croteau, Ryan Kanan, Dan Monahan and Erik Benedict sprung the North Middlesex running backs loose throughout the game.
Tom Bavis scored later in the first quarter to extend the lead to 14-0. Bavis struck again in the second quarter with a shifty seven-yard run that capped off a ten-play, 60-yard drive.
In the second half, Callahan found pay dirt with a hard-nosed two-yard run up the middle, led by Dan Gale, Andrew Hooper, Chris Kent, Bryan Croteau, Dan Kent, Jim Breen and Ben Ferro.
Callahan finished off the scoring with a great 29-yard touchdown catch and spectacular spin move to avoid Auburn defenders.
Liam Coughlin, who completed one of three passes for 29 yards, led the Mustangs’ offense with confidence and poise.
The Mustangs’ defense held a high-scoring Auburn offense to only one touchdown. Bavis led the defense with two sacks and a fumble recovery. Callahan pitched in with a sack. Mitch Hudlin had a great game stuffing the Auburn running backs at the line of scrimmage.
The Mustangs now enter the State Championship playoffs against the Sharon Eagles.
