Midle School Drama Club presents ‘Tales of Trickery’

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

HARVARD — This Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8, the Bromfield Middle School Drama Club will present “Tales of Trickery, A Triad of Comic Indonesian Folk Tales,” by Kim Alan Wheetley.

The play combines the traditions of the Wayang Kulit Shadow Puppet Theatre with those of the Topeng Theatre to tell three Indonesian folk stories.

Topeng is the Indonesian word for mask. In Topeng Panca, a company of actors portrays a variety of characters by changing masks. It combines ritual, dance, and story telling in a complex interplay between the past and the present. The cast is composed of seventh- and eighth-grade students and will include a traditional gamelan orchestra which is made up of costumed musicians in full view of the audience.

“Tales of Trickery” is directed by Martha Brooks, and will be presented in the Cronin Auditorium at The Bromfield School at 7:30 p.m. Tickets available at the door are priced at $10 for adults and $7 for students/senior citizens.

A slightly condensed version of the play will be Bromfield Middle School’s entry into the Massachusetts Middle School Drama Festival to be held in spring 2009.
