Branching Out: Noon to 5 p.m., Fruitlands Museum, Prospect Street, Harvard; Opening weekend for Joe Wheelwright’s “Tree Figures” exhibit of larger-than-life tree-based sculptures.

Grain of Truth: 1-3 p.m., Fruitlands Museum, Prospect Street, Harvard; Woodworker, author and Northeastern University professor Harvey Green will sign copies of his book, “Grain of Truth: Wood and the Human Condition.”

Morning bird walk: 7:30-9:30 a.m., meet at Rail Trail parking lot in downtown (Court Street) Groton; Hike with Peter Alden and the Friends of Willard Brook to seek out local birds in the height of the breeding season. Artist tour: Noon to 5 p.m., Fruitlands Museum, Prospect Street, Harvard; Take a stroll around the Fruitlands grounds with artist Joe Wheelwright and discover his sculptures. Hourly.

Thursday, July 3

Independence Day: 6-10 p.m., Rogers Field, Devens; RE/MAX hot air balloon rides (tethered), 6:30-8:30; music by Metropolitan Wind Symphony, 7-9:30; huge fireworks display at dusk. Admission free. Visit www.devenscommunity.com for events listing.
