At this year’s Annual Town Meeting (ATM), beginning May 12 at 7 p.m. in the Ayer Middle-High School auditorium, there are three articles important to the future of Ayer schools: Regionalization, capital requests and the overall school budget within the omnibus budget.

The regionalization article, in particular, is very important. It requests $20,000 to fund the drafting of a regional agreement. This article simply allows Ayer to continue the process of looking at regionalization.

This in no way binds Ayer to join a regional district with Shirley and/or Lunenburg. It simply allows the Ayer Regional School District Planning Committee to fund whatever assistance it may need — attorneys, consultants, etc. — to create a draft regional agreement.

Once completed, this draft agreement would then be presented to the town at a future annual or special town meeting for approval.

Lunenberg met May 3 to approve a similar article. Shirley meets May 13. At the conclusion of these various town meetings, we will know if all three or just two of the towns wish to move forward.

All three towns’ regional planning committees have recommended their town move to the next step in the process.

Ayer’s Finance Committee and Board of Selectman also support this article.

Thank you for your support.
