TOWNSEND — Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Ladies Auxiliary have announced the winners in their Patriot’s Pen essay contest.

One hundred and nineteen students who attend the Hawthorne Brook Middle School in Townsend or the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Still River entered the Townsend Patriot’s Pen essay contest for students in grades six through eight.

Danielle Vachon will receive the $100 first-place local award. Colleen Schroth will be awarded the $70 second-place prize and the third-place local award of $40 will go to Paige Clarke. All three local winners are eight-grade students at the Hawthorne Brook Middle School.

Rules of the contest allowed the Townsend VFW Post and its Ladies Auxiliary to submit one entry for each 15 entries or fraction thereof received at the local level into the district competition. As a result, Paige Clarke will receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond for her Patriot’s Pen essay contest entry being selected as the District 15 winner. Daniel Vachon will receive a $100 savings bond for placing third at the district level.

The winning contestants will receive their Patriot’s Pen contest awards at a special awards ceremony to be held at the Townsend VFW later in the school year.
