AYER — Retired U.S. Army Maj. Maurice F. MacDonald, 89, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at the Hillcrest Health Center, Fitchburg.

Mr. MacDonald was born in Dorchester on June 2, 1918, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (McPherson) MacDonald and has resided in Ayer for over 45 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Annemarie (Schwiebert) MacDonald; a son, Thomas MacDonald, of Ayer; two brothers, Allan MacDonald and Harold MacDonald, both of Mashpee; and a cousin, Thomas O’Connor, of Hanson.

For over 30 years Mr. MacDonald served his country in the United States Army, retiring in 1972 at the rank of major.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ayer, and was a former member of the Ayer Planning Board.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at St. Mary’s Church in Ayer.

Burial will be in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
