HARVARD — What was hoped to be a night of celebration for Lindsey Burke turned into a survival test for the Bromfield girls basketball team. On a night when Burke needed 22 points to become a member of the school’s 1000 point club, upstart Maynard came in and nearly upset the applecart. Bromfield used every bit of their experience and size to eke out a very tough 60-53 win.

Maynard came out with a gameplan, which included playing physical defense, frequent substitutions and plenty of long-range bombing. The Tigers played fearless basketball and put together a magnificent third quarter (25-9) which put them on top 47-41 over a tiring group of Lady Trojans. But keyed by a brilliant fourth quarter from Emily Reedich, and strong support from Kelly Thurston, the Lady Trojans maintained their poise and overcame a seven-point deficit.

The Tigers took a 50-43 lead a minute into the fourth quarter when Ashlee Poh drained a three-pointer, but Reedich simply took over. The junior forward was scoreless over the first three quarters, but sandwiched a pair of 15-footers around a fast break lay-up to key an 8-0 run which put Bromfield on top 51-50.

After Burke (15 points, 22 rebounds, two steals) hit a free throw, the emerging Thurston (15 points, 15 rebounds) hit a perimeter jumper to make it 54-50. Reedich then added a 15-footer and converted after hauling down an offensive rebound to build the lead to eight and seal the deal.

“Kelly and Emily did nice jobs and came up with big plays at big times,” said Bromfield coach Tom Hill. “Maynard was a better shooting team from the outside than I thought, but we did a great job off the boards and didn’t panic when we fell behind. I think our experience was the difference.”

The Tigers came out firing from long range, but came up empty in the early going, and Bromfield took advantage and threatened to blow the visitors out of the gym. With Burke scoring six points, and Casey Silver, Thurston and Henley Siegrist adding two apiece, the Lady Trojans broke out to a 12-2 lead.

Maynard never strayed from the gameplan and continued to fire away from behind the arc. Keyed by Kelsee Howes, Danielle Fairweather and Ashley Howes, the Tigers drew to within 26-22 with 1:30 left in the second period.

Bromfield regrouped and finished the half with a 6-0 run to take a 32-22 lead to intermission. Catherine Johnson buried a 17-footer, Siegrist finished off a fast break with a lay-up, before Thurston drained a pretty turnaround jumper.

Maynard exploded in the third quarter, keyed by four three-pointers and seemed to have the Lady Trojans on the ropes entering the final eight minutes.

Reedich added four rebounds to help the Lady Trojans to a dominating 51-21 edge off the boards in the game. Siegrist finished with eight points and three rebounds, while Johnson added seven points and four rebounds.

Ashley Howes led the Tigers with 14 points while Ashley Poh added 12 and Kelsee Howes had 11.
