SHIRLEY — School business manager Evan Katz has presented the fiscal year 2008 budget summary and detailed report to the School Committee.
Katz developed the summary, which he submitted in memorandum format, for internal use. It points out budget line items that may be a problem as the year progresses and provides updates on revenues and line-item transfers, he said at the committee’s Dec. 12 meeting.
Some of the concerns listed in the memo, dated Dec. 7, include that it’s too early in the heating season to establish whether the district will stay within the utility budget.
It may be under-funded, the memo states.
Additionally, it says special-education out-of-district costs have exceeded the budget by about $16,000, which was predicted in November.
Though payroll and bill expenses are following the budget plan, it says there may also be a need for a part-time English language learner teacher.
A non-English-speaking student recently entered the district, said interim Superintendent of Schools Malcolm Reid, and the state requires the school to provide a means for the student to begin learning English.
“The only ‘if’ is whether we can find one,” he said.
Prior to reviewing the summary, Katz asked that members let him know whether the format “works for the committee.”
The full-length report shows the budgeted amount of money versus expenditures to date, said Katz, along with the balance.
If the committee is satisfied with both reports, he said, “we can try to figure out what areas need to be tightened up.”
“I think the only time we need more details is when particular areas are in trouble,” said committee Chairman Robert Schuler.
