Local columnists appear in new book for rising authors

GROTON — Nashoba Publishing columnists and authors Caroline Poser and Kathryn Mahoney contributed to a new book, written by their publisher, Nancy Cleary, of Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing, titled, “A Book is Born: 24 Authors Tell All.” Cleary’s new title exposes the emotional underbelly of the publishing process, including the experiences of Poser and Mahoney as well as 22 other authors whose books were published by Wyatt-MacKenzie of Deadwood, Ore.

In the book, the authors bare their souls on everything from the conception of their books to how they found a publisher, developed a marketing plan, navigated the Amazon.com jungle, and pitched their books to local and national media. Interspersed with these honest insights are technical tips, tools, examples and creative marketing ideas drawn from Cleary’s nearly 10 years in the publishing industry.

The project was Cleary’s brainchild three years ago. “I recognized a need in the market for a publishing guide that included the emotional and spiritual highs and lows that occur throughout the publishing process,” Cleary said.

The book came on the heels of another innovative idea Cleary had developed. Her publishing company, the namesake of her two children Wyatt and Mackenzie, was formed because she wanted to leave a legacy for her children. In this same vein, she wanted to offer a way for other mothers to do the same for their children.

“I knew there were many mothers out there who were also talented writers and had a story to tell,” Cleary said. “I wanted to provide them with the opportunity to get their stories out into the world.” Cleary created the Mom-Writers Publishing Cooperative and published each of these women’s unique stories between 2005 and 2007. She then had the women document their individual publishing journeys and wove this information, with her insightful narrative and publishing knowledge, into, A Book is Born: 24 Authors Tell All.

ForeWord Magazine, the leading publication for book reviews from independent presses, chose to feature a review on A Book is Born out of thousands of soon-to-be-released titles for their November/December issue. The magazines review states A Book is Born is ” an excellent source of support and comfort for new authors.”

Other well-known authors of publishing-industry books offered additional glowing reviews.

“A Book is Born is as much about inspiration as it is about practical advice. It is about the intricacies of publishing and how to keep the joy in the process. Quite advanced with fresh, instinctual takes on subjects that will give those who have been writing awhile a joyous boot-in-the-butt,” is the review by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of the Frugal Book Promoter series.

Sheri McConnell, founder of the National Association of Women Writers, writes, “A Book is Born is a phenomenal tool for new and previously-published authors! My favorite section is about the science of getting published. This section alone is a must-read for anyone who is thinking they want to birth a book.”
