AYER — Robert W. Gardner, 90, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Gardner was born in Pepperell on April 7, 1917, a son of Robert H. and Maude (Riley) Gardner and resided many years in Ayer before recently moving to Westford. He attended the Ayer public schools and also the Worcester Trade High School.

Mr. Gardner is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Cogan) Gardner; a son and daughter-in-law, the Honorable Robert W. and Jacqueline Gardner of Worcester; and a daughter, Patricia M. Gardner, with whom he resided in Westford. He also leaves 10 grandchildren: Sharon Hebert and her husband, Eric, and Maureen Breault and her husband, David, all of Ayer; Erin Murphy and her husband, Peter, of Townsend; Colleen Ryan and her husband, Stephen, of Hudson, N.H.; Kevin Barry and his fiancée, Veronica Chitwood, of Westborough; Emily Lindblad and her husband, Andrew, of Somerville; Eileen Gardner of Washington, D.C.; Elizabeth Gardner of Boston; and Thomas Gardner and Margaret Gardner, both of Worcester. He also leaves seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Francis Gardner of Pepperell and Eleanor C. Gardner of Ayer.

Mr. Gardner was a self-employed construction contractor and builder.

During WW II he served his country in the United States Navy. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Ayer. He was also a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local 107 in Worcester.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 at St. Mary’s Church, 31 Shirley Street, Ayer. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Please see www.andersonfuneral.com for additional information.
