AYER — Ayer Middle-High School’s new social studies teacher, Thomas Roddy, has a passion for history and politics.
“Social studies is a great way to learn how we, as a society, got to where we are today,” he said. “By learning about our past, we can explain a lot of things that happen in today’s world.”
Roddy grew up in Shrewsbury, where he attended high school and met his wife, whom he married on Christmas Eve last year. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in history and political science and master’s degree in education from University of Massachusetts Amherst.
“While I was in school, I had some great teachers as well as some really poor teachers,” he said. “My experiences with both have inspired me to become the best teacher I can be.”
Roddy previously taught at Mahar Regional School in Orange, but is looking forward to getting to know the students and families in Ayer.
“In my class, parents can expect engaging lessons that are aligned with the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks and also fairness in how I treat and grade all of my students,” he said. — Katrina Folger
