TOWNSEND — It’s in the hardest of times that friends and family are needed most.
When Lori Lapierre-Desalvo became paralyzed in a car accident on June 11, her friends stepped forward to help.
Desalvo, who is still hospitalized, will need to have her home modified to be handicapped accessible when she’s released. She currently has limited motion in her fingers and will need a higher-end wheel chair, too.
In addition, Desalvo’s family, including her four kids, will have to transition into living without the income she raised at her two jobs, as a hairdresser at New Impressions in Groton and as a real estate agent for Foster-Healey in Fitchburg.
Talking together, Desalvo’s work colleagues began brainstorming a benefit party with her family and friends.
The culmination of their work will be a full-day party open to the general public at the Townsend VFW Function Hall on Sunday, Sept. 8, starting at 1 p.m.
From 1 to 5 p.m. there will be games and activities for all ages.
While the indoor activities are underway, there will be a benefit motorcycle ride, escorted by the police, traveling from the VFW to New Ipswich.
Anyone interested in the ride can register at the VFW at 1 p.m., for $20.
By 5 p.m. the benefit ride will return to the VFW for Italian food, for $10 per person, plus entertainment including karaoke and the Tim Rollo Band until 11 p.m.
In addition to the entertainment, there will be over 40 raffles ranging from Bruins tickets to bicycles to the grand prize of a seven-day Caribbean cruise with Carnival cruise lines.
Friend and employer BethAnn Lelieve of New Impressions said the benefit party is fitting because Desalvo has always been positive about life.
“Even after the accident, she still is,” said Lelieve.
Direct donations can be mailed to Lori and Vincent Desalvo c/o Workers Credit Union, 815 Main St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
