I feel that Geoff Woollacott’s comments in his Public Spirit column are somewhere between ignorant and stupid. They vilify somebody who was doing a public service. What would your headlines have said under more tragic circumstances — “Child and dog die in parked car?”

I feel that your action in allowing publication of the column was thoughtless at best and criminal at worst. Will there be a case where a member of the public now deliberately decides not to “drop a dime” for fear of being ridiculed? We will perhaps never know. Be it a theft, break-in, assault, shoplifting, rape or murder you have done your small part to further the code of Omerta.

A public apology is called for.
