Despite the chilly rain on Saturday, May 19, the Garden Club of Harvard’s annual plant sale was a huge success. Thanks to all the gardeners who ventured out to buy our shrubs, perennials and annuals. Proceeds from the sale will go to the club’s continued efforts to landscape and beautify the public spaces in town.
This year’s plant sale co-chairmen, Mary Helan Turner and Carlene Phillips, were aided by dedicated members of the club who worked tirelessly to make the sale a success. Barbara Heim got things rolling by setting up the potting workshops at the Westward Orchards barn on Oak Hill. Once again, the Garden Club is indebted to Karen and Don Green for letting us use their space. Club President Marty Green, with Kathy Jackson and Shirley Boudreau, oversaw the four weeks of potting workshops, where members dug plants from their gardens and brought them to be potted up for sale. She also made illustrated labels for the plants, which proved most helpful for shoppers and sellers alike! Alice Gebura made publicity posters and flyers and later headed up the herbs and veggies department. Connie Grabowy and Sue Fitterman, assisted by Shirley Boudreau and Cindy Rush, went to members’ gardens to do some digging for those whose backs are no longer willing.
At 7 a.m. on the day of the sale, Molly Cutler, Mimi Dorward, Vicky Burns, Karen Green, Don Green and Cindy Rush began transporting plants from the farm, pulling up on Ayer Road and unloading trays into the waiting hands of the early shift on the common. The sales of healthy — and well-watered! — plants were accompanied by expert advice and suggestions from the perennial sales team: Karen Green, Joan Dillard, Karen Zaikis, Barbara Heim, Dorene Lewis, Becky Shives, Joan Chu, Lois Frampton, Shirley Boudreau, Jessie Panek and Marie Finnegan.
This year’s selection of perennials seemed even better than ever. Thanks to all the members and friends who donated plants from their lovely gardens. Special thanks to Jessie Panek, Barbara Heim, Dorene Lewis, Sandy Lefkovitz, Madelaine Ferguson, Phyllis Clawson, Millie Chandler, Joan Rice and Phyllis Konop. Thanks, too, to Connie Grabowy and Cindy Rush who donated tomato, pepper and flower seedlings they had raised.
Fran Maiore, Teddy Coffin, Kathy Jackson, Cindy O’Brien and Joanne Williamson had purchased a nice selection of annuals, and Pat Shaw and Joan Burns helped to sell them. Chris Ready staffed the children’s table with unusual kid-friendly pots of annuals from Lancaster Garden. Customers experienced a smooth check-out system this year, stopping first to have their purchases tallied by Kathy Jackson and her crew. They then moved on to cashiers Phyllis Newman, Arly Waldron and club treasurer Rachel Oglesby. Rachel Ross, Vicki Burns and Connie Grabowy stayed to see the last traces of activity cleared from the common. Several spouses and children of members helped with the transportation, set-up and take-down, and we greatly appreciate their help. Sincere thanks to Paul Green, John Oglesby, Kate Oglesby, Don Phillips, Dave James, James and Dan Turner, John Burns and Larry Finnegan.
Happy gardening! See you next year at the GCH plant sale!
