GROTON — Gillis Homes Inc. is offering homebuyers a unique opportunity to bid in an on-site auction to purchase 42 Wharton Row, the only remaining new-construction home in Groton’s popular Ames Meadow neighborhood.

The first of three “preview” open houses was held on Saturday, March 3. Eight families came by to look at the new home, and builder Stephen J. Gillis was busy showing the home for more than an hour after the open house was scheduled to end. Interested parties will have two more opportunities to tour the property prior to the auction; on Saturday, March 10, and Saturday, March 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sealed bids will be accepted on-site on March 24 at 11 a.m.

“The family that buys this home is going to be very happy,” said Gills, a local home builder. “This is a great neighborhood, and a beautiful area to live in. This home was built with many custom features that the whole family will enjoy.”

The Wharton Row unit is the last of 32 homes to be sold in the family-friendly Ames Meadow neighborhood, all of which were built by Gillis Homes Inc. of Topsfield, Mass. The 3,800-square-foot custom home features 11-plus rooms, including four bedrooms, and is situated on a 3.25-acre lot which abuts the Groton Town Conservation Forest. Local amenities include a quality school system, plenty of restaurants and shopping, and the 12-mile Rail Trail.

“We are expecting a great turnout for this auction,” said Gillis. “Our first preview open house was buzzing like the open houses of 18 months ago. Interest rates are low, and the informed buyer realizes that now is the time to buy.”
